The number of strokes you give (or get) depends on the type of format you’re playing; whether a match against one other player, play with three others, or a stroke-play event. Each is different.
Check the scorecard to determine where you’ll give or receive strokes. Each hole has a handicap number. The number one handicap hole is where you’ll most likely need a stroke. The number 18 handicap hole is where you’ll probably not need a stroke.
If Karen has a course handicap of 22 against my 16, she will get six strokes from me in match play. She will get her strokes on the six lowest numbered holes.
In net stroke play events, simply deduct your Course Handicap number from your actual score.
